Health Benefits of Watermelon

1. Hydrating

The high water content of watermelon (over 90% water), together with its electrolyte content help to hydrate the body and prevent against the dangers of high heat and humidity of summer.  It contains both potassium and magnesium which work together in reducing blood pressure in the veins and arteries. The high water content of watermelon allows the body to cool down in the heat through the sweating process.



2. Great food for diabetics

People with diabetes have to follow a low energy and low sugar diet which can leave them feeling hungry and unsatisfied.  Although watermelons are not high in calories,, they do contain a lot of (sweet) water and  a good amount of fibre. Eating them can help to satisfy  hunger for a while.  The potassium in watermelons improves insulin function and together with magnesium, lovers blood pressure as well.

3. Fights against cancer

Watermelons, together with tomatoes are high in lypocene content. Lypocene is a carotenoid that is increasingly being referenced in cancer prevention. Watermelons also contain vitamin C, which is widely known for its anti-cancer benefits as an antioxidant. The phytonutrient citruline, found in watermelons, helps fight against cancer by strengthening the immune system and helping the body rid itself of toxic elements such as ammonia.

4.  Muscle soreness, recovery and inflammation

Watermelon contains citruline, which converts to the amino acid arginine. Among its other benefits, arginine aids in relieving muscle soreness after extended effort and in muscle recovery and rebuilding. The choline in watermelons helps with sleep, muscle movement and reduces inflammation. The lypocene contained in watermelon also reduces inflammation.

5. Eye health

Macular degeneration leading to age-related blindness and the possibility of glaucoma and cataracts can be discouraging. Watermelon contains several phytonutrients to help with these conditions: beta-carotene, vitamin C,  lutein and zeanthin. Of course, all the water contained in this fruit helps to keep the tissues soft and malleable.

6. Heart health

Watermelon is helpful for maintaining healthy heart functions. It lowers  and regulates blood pressure ( potassium and magnesium) , protects arteries and veins (carotenoids) , relaxes blood vessels  and arteries (potassium).


7. Skin and hair benefits

Our skin and hair are the first indicators of  health. When we are not doing so well on the inside, this will be reflected in the condition of our hair and skin first. Watermelon has a number of phytonutrients to help our skin and hair stay hydrated and strong. Vitamin A aids in the production of sebum and in tissue growth. Vitamin C helps to build and maintain college in the body. Both (sebum and collegen) give us healthy looking skin and hair.
