5 Ways We Block Our Success

5 Ways We Block Our Success

Category : Success

One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.—Henry Ford

The Seeds of Greatness

We were all born with the potential to do amazing things. No one was born lucky with all the skills in place to be better than another. We each have the seeds of greatness in us..  As little children, we imagine amazing dreams for our lives – all the things we will do and the places we will go. Our childlike imaginations are endless and fearless. We knew we could be whatever we wanted to be.

Somewhere along the path of growing up, we lose this sense of wonder and possibility. Often we allow the circumstances and responsibilities of life to take away our sense of wide-eyed wonder of what could be.  It reminds me of  The Logical Song by the musical band Super Tramp. This song describes how a child goes from being creative and imaginative (before being sent off to school) to learning how to be “logical”, “practical” and  “cynical” at school.

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.—Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Potential

What if I told you that the potential is still there? What if I told you that the only thing holding you back is your thinking?  What if I told you that just changing certain patterns would make a world of difference and you could begin to start doing what you have always wanted to do?

5 Things That Hold Us Back From Our Potential

1. Anticipating Failure

Failure isn’t fatal, but failure to change might be – John Wooden

We are so accustomed (from we were little children) to being told “no”. People around us are quick to tell us that something we want to do is not possible, too hard or shouldn’t be done. Discouraging remarks are plentiful. All our lives we hear this negativity and we start to create a pessimistic attitude. We even pass this on to our children under the guise that we are protecting them. We tell them what not to do so much more than we tell them what they can do.

We are conditioned to actually believe that we can not succeed, so we just don’t even try. We think success is just for the “lucky ones”. “They can do it”, we tell ourselves, “but I can’t.” The reality is that you can if you will. It is all a matter of perspective and attitude.

2. Blaming Others

The search for someone to blame is always successful – Robert Half

We all like to blame the government, the economy, the boss, our past and our parents, don’t we? It seems easier and more satisfying to shift the responsibility somewhere else. Then we can say that our failures don’t really belong to us, that they are not really our fault.  But, the minute we shift the responsibility (and blame) onto someone or something else for our lack of success or opportunity, we lose our own power to do something about it. We end up feeling powerless in this situation.

Taking responsibility means grabbing back the power to change our situation. We can become an asset to ourselves.

3. Letting Fear Control Us

Being brave isn’t the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through it —Bear Grylls

Fear holds a lot of people back. They want to do things – start a new business, travel, start a family or go back to school, but, because of fear, they don’t even try. The fact is, most of the things we fear do not even materialize. Fear is really F.E.A. R – False Evidence Appearing Real. More is feared than actually happens. Our response to ongoing fear is worry.  As a society, we worry about everything.  It is an epidemic. We actually worry much more than we think.

Fear is the most destructive force in the world today and the cause of many of our world’s problems.  The opposite of fear is FAITH – the belief that all things are possible. So, we have a choice; we can allow our lives to be controlled by fear or we can step out in faith and tear it up!

4. Not Having Goals

If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes —Andrew Carnegie

If we don’t have any goals, we will certainly reach them.  We won’t go anywhere or do anything of any significance. Goals are what keep us alive and dreaming. They are what we strive for. Not having any goals makes each day pointless to wake up to. Without goals, people become angry, frustrated, apathetic and depressed.

And the end of our life, when we look back, what will we say?  What will we wish we had done? Not too many people will say “Oh if only I had spent more hours at the office.” Probably not. But they will wish they had spent more time doing what is important and what can make a difference.

Goals need to be written down. they need to be specific with a date (time frame). Not writing down our goals leaves them in the “someday” category and we all know that “someday” is not a day in the calendar.

What goals (health, family,  personal or other) can you begin setting today?

5. Not Working With A Team

There is no such thing as a self-made man. You will reach your goals only with the help of others ― George Shinn

As the saying goes “No man is an island.” We need the support and encouragement of others to succeed. We need teachers and mentors who have traveled the road before us. We need cheerleaders along the way to protect us against the negativity around us. A supportive “team” helps us to become more confident and believe that we can do it!

A team can help us set goals and move towards them. A team can hold us accountable to what we say we wanted to do. When we surround ourselves with people who are pursuing and chasing dreams and goals, we begin to do the same. Every successful person (athlete, artist, business owner etc. ) has a team around them. They draw strength from the supportive people around them.

A team also includes the books we read. We can learn from the experience of those who have gone before us. Reading books to help us grow is a terrific way to leverage time and a team.

Your success is really up to you. You have the power to decide what you will think, what you will believe and what actions you will take.  Your life is really in your hands and your future is in what you think today. Don’t let fear of failure, negative influences, and worry stop you from becoming all that you were meant to be.

Have a great day!!!
